Family Mediation FAQs
What does family mediation involve?
Family mediation involves structured discussions between you and the other party, guided by a trained, impartial mediator. During sessions, you will work through issues such as child arrangements, or property division and financial settlements in a calm, neutral environment. Your mediator won’t take sides or make decisions for you, but will help you both communicate effectively and explore practical solutions that work for your family.
At Mediate UK, we’ve successfully supported over 13,000 families through this process, and our mediators are all registered with the Family Mediation Council, ensuring you receive professional, fully regulated high-quality support throughout.
What is the success rate of family mediation in the UK?
Family mediation has a strong success rate, with a national average of 73% of couples who complete the process reaching full or partial agreements.
At Mediate UK, we’re proud that our average success rate of 90%* consistently exceeds the national average. This is driven by our experienced mediators and comprehensive support approach.
Success often depends on both parties’ willingness to engage constructively. However, even where full agreement isn’t reached, mediation usually narrows the issues that require court involvement — saving time, money, and emotional stress.
*2025 data, 90% of Mediate UK clients who attended joint mediation went on to achieve full or partial agreement.
Is family mediation free or funded by the government?
Family mediation isn’t typically free for everyone, but legal aid funding may be available if you’re on a low income or receive certain benefits. You can check eligibility here.
If you qualify, the government covers the full cost of your mediation sessions. If you don’t, we offer transparent fixed fees with no hidden costs, and most clients find mediation more affordable than going to court. For parenting matters we are signed up to the government voucher scheme, which provides £500 towards your joint mediation costs.
How much does family mediation cost in the UK?
At Mediate UK, our fees are clear and transparent:
- An online MIAM costs £115 per person +VAT
- Joint mediation sessions are charged at £120 per person, per hour +VAT
Most clients resolve matters within a small number of sessions, although this can vary depending on the complexity of the issues involved.
We will always explain likely costs upfront during your initial consultation so you can make informed decisions.
